Low Sugar Diets
It is important to reduce the amount of sugar in your horses diet. Sugars change the population of bacteria in your horses hind gut, by altering the pH, making it more acidic. This results in toxins that create inflammation and thus laminitis.

Hay Analysis
There is a strong connection between nutrition and hoof health. So, I was determined to learn more about this topic so that I can educate clients and help their horses. I recently earned a certificate for completing Dr. Kellon's NRC Plus (Equine Nutrition Balancing) course. Dr. Kellon is a world renowned Equine Nutrition Veterinarian who offers online courses on a variety of topics.
I took the course so that I could offer hay collection and hay analysis as a service to horse owners. When I come to your farm to trim, I will bring equipment to sample your hay. Then, I help you fill out the paperwork, and we send your sample to Equi-analytical. Then, when we receive the analysis, I will calculate and send you a report that shows what your horses are getting from their hay. This information is extremely helpful. You will find out if your horse is getting adequate calories, protein, Major minerals (Ca, P, Mg) and trace minerals. More importantly you will find out if your horse is getting too much Potassium, Iron, and Manganese which can cause behavioral changes, lameness and insulin resistance. Ask Shelley about this service! Fee for collecting hay sample: $10.00 Fee for Collection and Analysis service for up to two horses is $75.00.

Gut Health and Probiotic Supplements (Sugar and Acidosis)
Grass, grain and some hay can be filled with sugar. Sugar causes the pH of the hind gut to drop. This reduces the hindgut microbes and thus less nutrients are absorbed. In order for probiotics to work, we need to make changes to the diet as well as prepare the hind gut. There are several great products that are very effective at increasing the pH of the hind gut to help the horse transition to a low starch/high forage diet, and with the addition of probiotics, the horse's health and behavior will improve! Here is one product that I recommend. Click on the link to learn more about this product. It is a crystalized bicarbonate that reaches the hind gut and raises pH to proper levels. GUT HEALTH

Benefits of Stone Footing
Providing an environment that conforms to the hoof is essential for stimulating all parts of the hoof allowing the horse to use their foot correctly. In addition, gravel footing drains better, is easy to keep clean and helps feet develop toughness, so that their feet are prepared for trail conditions.
